Everyone needs to setup their vent & soundcard options to prevent feedback echos.

First, 'Push to talk' is one of your best friends. This can be inconvenient, but it really helps keep feedback from building & cuts on needless traffic at times. (I'm not discouraging random chat, though.)

Second, make sure vent is set to the right input setting.
WALKTHROUGH: Open Vent, hit SETTINGS. On the right-hand side, the Input Device should be set to "Microphone (*system device here*). MIXER should be set to "Microphone" as well. (Usually the same option as the Input device). The MUX & LINE options should be something like "Master Volume" or something similar.
The Amplifier settings should be set right at 0 unless you specifically need to change them. If others say you are loud, turn down your Outbound volume.

Thats the easy part. The harder part is customizing your soundcar mixer settings. This depends on what soundcard & drivers you have. The basics, open your soundcard mixer. (Usually a speaker icon in the system tray). Make sure on this mixer board, any Mic or Input settings are UNMARKED.
Next, there should be 'Options' up in the top left corner. Inside that, there should be Properties, click that. Now you should be able to select Output (or something similar) & Recording devices. Select Recording. In this mixer board, you need to select Microphone only. No other recording devices should be marked. Apply these settings & you should be good.
No more bad echoes.

Any questions, talk to Gorshgu / Swiftwrath.

also, for the comfort of your ears, here is how you can set vent to automatically boost the low talkers, and hush the noisy people... (quoted from the old tdc forums, where I first found out this could be done).

Here's how to normalize voices so you dont blow your eardrums out when joe breaths into his mic (or someone slips with their volume, etc)

Go into Setup
- Enable Direct Sound

Click the SFX Button
- Select Compressor and click Add.
- Under Compressor Properties use the following settings
- Gain = Adjust for how loud you want people to be. (I use 15)
- Attack = 0.01
- Release = Around 500
- Threshold = Around -30
- Ratio = 100
- Pre delay = 4.0

Some people have reported that a gain of 15 is too low, and people are generally too quiet. You can combat this by raising your inbound volume, or raising your gain. Because these changes are dependant on your sound card, mileage may vary.

thats good to know. I've been setting volumes for each user if they've been too high or low.
